Welcome to Third Grade! This year we will spend most of our time reading, writing, and problem solving. We have an awesome selection of books that cover a variety of interests and content areas. Fluency and comprehension are two main goals in our literacy block. It is important that students read at least 20 minutes a night in order to maintain a healthy habit of independent reading. I have found that the best way to encourage this at home is to intentionally select a time and place that works best for the child such as 20 minutes before bedtime. In addition, allowing children to select books that interest them can also be a great help in fostering the habit of reading at home. For example, my son who is in fourth grade really enjoys choosing books about sports to read.

In addition to reading and writing various types of texts, students will also become proficient problem solvers in third grade. We will learn various methods to promote rigorous thinking and learning in math.
